‘Health and Wellness,’ as defined by the World Health Organization, “is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (http://haroldjr.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/definitions_of_health.pdf).”  Being able to make smart choices for our bodies is not easy for everyone, and this ultimately affects a person’s psyche.  In fact, research has shown that “obesity now affects 17% of all children and adolescents in the United States - triple the rate from just one generation ago.”  It’s alarming to think that “obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, are some of the leading causes of preventable death (http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/adult.html ).”  So then how do we teach classroom students to make wise choices in all these aspects of “wellbeing?”  That is the million dollar question that the government has spent millions of tax dollars trying to figure out.  During my research I came across a reputable website that investigates the American food culture, and further explains why our minds are so prone to desire fatty foods.  Furthermore, many schools are already integrating technology within their academic curriculum, and so this particular interface can be used in the classroom setting as well.  Students access the online interface, and everyday enter their food choices and mood.  Their selections will be recorded through the interface and calculate their food consumption throughout the school year.  It will also have the ability to offer healthier choices for the students, and suggest exercise plans.  Through the use of technology in the classroom, we can conveniently assist our incorrigible children to not become a “statistic.”  So join us on our quest to educate our students over the fundamentals of a well-rounded ‘Health and Wellness plan.’

Abstract

One of the main reasons why most instructors create a classroom course is to have a clear understanding of what they want the students to learn. In other words, have the end in mind first followed by the step by step process in creating a successful course. This is why most instructors implement and create an Instructional System design model. It helps the instructor design a clear blue print of the course.

Team one has identified two practical instructional models they would like to utilize during their course creation. The Dick & Carey and ADDIE models are the team’s choice and would like to incorporate both models into the creation of a health and wellness course design. Our team will fully develop each model component and specify which one of the component works the best and which one needs to be adjusted during the development process.
